“Ride the Rainbow!” is a collection of work that was created throughout 2021. Having been forced indoors for much of the year I started exploring other ways to reinvent my "canvas" and began experimenting with different processes. I got the idea from a few commissions for address signs and decided to experiment with more abstract shapes and ideas. After seeing a few of these pieces displayed together I decided to create a group of these pieces and display them together. The power of this collection is seeing everything at once; the facial expressions and emotions, along with the flow of all the colors and shapes. The name for the collection was clear, "Ride the Rainbow!"; capturing the spectrum of emotions and aesthetics in this body of work.
The inspiration for these pieces came to me from objects I fascinate over, doodles from sketchbooks, faces I envisioned in spilled paint and creatures from my dreams.
The process for each individual piece was generally the same. Each piece was sketched digitally to plan out colors and design, then transferred to wood with a projector or freehand. With a jigsaw and a scroll saw I freed the shapes from their wooden prison, sanded and primed them. Some pieces had specific areas, like eyeballs and teeth, masked out and then the piece was spray painted creating rich gradients and interesting textures while preserving the lighter colors. Next I took to the brushes and added all the shadows and highlights, topping them off with crisp black lines. This is the point best for photographing a piece, before the gloss gets in the way of photos. After documenting, I would line the edges of the back with packing tape and use a razor to cut excess tape from the shape. Now the piece receives a resin bath followed by a kiss from the blow torch to get rid of any air bubbles. The final step is removing the tape and resin drip from the back, installing mounting gear and hanging the piece for display. I kept everything on the walls in my home to save space and it definitely got crowded!
